Tobago is the perfect place to unwind and do nothing –
or get out there and do everything! Not sure where to start?
Here are a few ideas from month to month…
January-February
-
If you rang in the New Year with us, you’ll probably
want to relax for a day or two before you start gearing
up for the high-voltage Carnival season, which begins
with the usual round of fetes, steel band and calypso
performances that precede J’Ouvert, the official
start of the two days of street masquerade. The celebration
ends with Las’ Lap as Ash Wednesday signals the
start of the Lenten season.
-
Check out a few of the village Harvest Festivals.
-
Golf tournaments are also on at this time of year.
March
- The Turtle Nesting season begins and
runs through August – a great opportunity to see
this endangered species lay eggs.
- Fishing enthusiasts can reel in a catch
or two at the Tobago Game Fishing Tournament.
April
- Easter is a great time in Tobago – the weather
is perfect for catching the Good Friday and Easter Monday
goat and crab races!
- In the mood for some music? The Plymouth Jazz Festival
is the hottest thing on the international music calendar
– past headliners include Sting and Stevie Wonder,
with Elton John being pegged to appear at the 2007 event.
May
- Trinidad and Tobago is world-famous for its Angostura
Bitters, but did you know about Angostura Sail Week? Far
more than just sailing races, the event is six nights
of activities, held at the Crown Point Beach Hotel.
June
- Fishing is a staple of the Tobago economy – how
else would you enjoy all that fresh seafood? St. Peter’s
Day (June 29, in honour of the patron saint of fishermen),
is celebrated in a big way, with a Fishermen’s Festival
at Charlotteville.
- Harvest Festivals continue in different villages around
the island.
July
- Perhaps the biggest event on the Tobago calendar, the
Tobago Heritage Festival is a must-see! A grand tribute
to the island’s unique history and culture, the
event keeps wonderful cultural storytelling and traditions
alive.
August
- We can hardly contain our excitement! The Great Fete
Weekend kicks off the month of August on the first weekend
of the month at the Store Bay Beach Facility and The Great
Race, an annual, 85-mile power boat race from Trinidad
to Tobago, which is held on the fourth weekend in August,
culminates at Store Bay, so our guests have the best vantage
point from which to see the exciting finish!
- Our twin island nation celebrates its Independence
on August 31.
September-October
- From culture to sport, this is a busy time in Tobago
– Tobago Fest is a carnival-style celebration, and
there are also cycling and golf competitions to keep you
active!
November-December
- Tobago’s rich topography makes it a great destination
for bird watching at any time of year, but closer to Christmas
is an especially good time for birders.
- ‘Tis
the season to be jolly, and everyone in Tobago certainly
is at this time of year! We celebrate Christmas in a big
way, complete with an annual kite-flying festival and
Old Year’s Night (or New Year’s Eve) celebrations.
Here’s to another exciting year!
